Aims and objectives of Willows High School Mathematics Department
The aim of the Mathematics Department is to give all pupils a thorough and sound mathematical education, enabling each to achieve his/her full potential and appreciate the usefulness, power and necessity of mathematics.
In order to achieve these we strive to ensure that the following aims and objectives are reflected in our departmental and curriculum organisation; that each student:
•Has the opportunity, motivation and environment required to develop and consolidate their mathematical skills, knowledge and understanding;
•Encounters mathematics in a variety of siuations, both abstract and real, and can employ a variety of methods (mental, written, calculator-based, computer-based, practical) as appropriate to tackle and solve problems;
•Can work independently or co-operatively on a problem with confidence and enjoyment, and enquire into new and unfamiliar situations in a logical way, drawing valid and reasoned conclusions;
•Can apply their mathematical ideas verbally, in writing and using diagrams where appropriate;
•Can apply their mathematics in everday situations, thus realising and appreciating that it is a living applicable subject;
•Will be supported if experiencing difficulties, and receive extended material if it will benefit them;
•Will appreciate and value the work, effort and expertise of others, respecting their opinions and beliefs.
